Dragon Ball Super: 10 Things You May Not Know About Jiren

The Tournament of Power arc was undoubtedly the best arc in Dragon Ball Super. It introduced fans to a lot of new characters and one such addition was Jiren The Gray. There is no doubt whatsoever that Jiren is by far the strongest fighter Goku has encountered. Jiren left his mark on the tournament of Power as it took Universe 7’s strongest warriors, pushing themselves beyond their limits, to eliminate him.

So far, we don’t know much about Jiren but there are certain details that do come to light. Here is a list of 10 things you may not know about Jiren.

Jiren is stronger than a God of Destruction

With the introduction of Gods of Destruction, Dragon Ball Super laid down a new standard. Stronger than a Super Saiyan, Fusion, and even God Ki this standard was seemingly unachievable for Goku and Vegeta. Jiren, however, broke this standard pushing far beyond the power of a Destroyer God. Belmond, Universe 11’s God of Destruction, confirmed that Jiren is stronger than the weakest God of Destruction. Jiren displayed such raw strength during the tournament that fans are now using his power level as the new standard.

Jiren Has a very Simple fighting Style

Many fans might complain that the fight choreography was the reason why Jirens fighting style seemed bland but that’s not the case. Jiren stands out from other characters in Dragon Ball Super as he lacks any unique fighting style. He focuses more on using his raw strength to outdo his opponents and it works for him.

Jiren fights all Stages of Super Saiyan

Jiren currently holds the record for facing off against the most forms of Super Saiyan. During his fight with Goku, he experienced Super Saiyan, SSJ2, SSJG, and SSJB. When SSJB fails Goku uses kaioken with SSJB which again failed to do any significant damage. Apart from Goku, Jiren also faced the evolved form of Vegeta and the Berserker Super Saiyan through Kale.

He has no transformation

One of the most interesting things about Jiren is that he doesn’t have any transformation. In a series where villain transformations are as common as Saiyan ones, its quite rare. Jiren doesn’t need any transformation as he flies by on his own power level. Just like Beerus, he is powerful enough to not need any sort of transformation.

Jiren can breathe in Space

Saiyan’s can’t breathe in space, well not for long periods of time. As a matter of fact, only a handful of characters in the series are known to breathe in space including Jiren. Not only can he survive in Space, but he is also fast enough to travel from planet to planet without the use of a spacecraft. Let’s just hope Toriyama keeps it this way.

He is the only person to successfully re-direct Goku’s Spirit Bomb

Although many villains have survived the Spirit Bomb, none have ever been able to successfully push it back. Jiren is the first person to ever do so. During his first encounter with Goku, he asked Goku to throw him his best shot at which Goku launched a fully charged Spirit Bomb at him. The Spirit Bomb could have easily wiped any normal Dragon Ball villain but Jiren isn’t normal. He effortlessly pushed the Spirit Bomb back redirecting it towards Goku.

Jiren is the true hero of the Tournament of Power

It’s hard to believe that Jiren is the actual hero in the arc but think about it for a moment. The main purpose of the Tournament was to show the struggle different characters had to go through. Jiren suffers from a tragic backstory which led him to become the strongest person alive. He wanted to use his strength to save his friends and those that matter to him the most. Goku, on the other hand, was just there to fight the strongest warriors and hone his skills. Jirens selflessness proves in the end that he is, in fact, the true hero.

Toriyama came up with his backstory

Dragon Ball Super is known to give its villains some depth in their backstory but that’s not the case with Jiren. Fans were disappointed with his “my family was murdered when I was young” archetype backstory. It’s even more surprising when one finds out that Jirens backstory was created by Toriyama himself. Jirens backstory is so depthless that it feels out of place. Many fans think that there is more to his backstory and if there is, it is yet to be shown.

He has a Shrinking Device

Something that a lot of fans might not know about is that Jiren has a shrinking device. This is because it was never shown in the anime but has appeared in the manga. Don’t forget that Jiren is a member of the Pride troopers, the manga devotes some time to show Jirens exploits as a trooper. In one chapter Jiren had to deal with an escaped prisoner. it was during that moment when he used a device strapped to his wrist to shrunk down his enemies. It’s a shame that this didn’t come to play in the anime.

He Could have won the tournament of Power if he tried

One of the major flaws in Jirens character is his disregard for something that isn’t worth his effort. His haughty attitude led to his and Universe 11’s demise. If he had been more inclined towards doing what was right than he could have easily won the tournament of Power without breaking a sweat. He didn’t take the tournament seriously which is precisely why Goku was able to catch up to his power level and ultimately unlock Ultra instinct. Had he taken the situation more seriously than the number of episodes would have been reduced dramatically.
