In the recent DBS Broly movie fans were introduced to an all-new version of the infamous Saiyan. Originally appearing in the 1993 movie, Dragon Ball Z: Broly- The Legendary Super Saiyan, he was introduced as the true Saiyan mentioned in the Legends with Power that was rivaled by none.
This movie was a major hit and resulted in several movie sequels, appearances in games and more. Broly quickly turned into one of the fans all-time favorites. However, he was never canon until the recent DBS: Broly movie. Broly received a major reboot not only to his character design but also to his backstory and abilities. This updated version of Broly proved to be a success. DBS: Broly is already being hailed as one the best dragon ball movies ever created.
The original version of Broly was born around the time Goku was born. In infancy, Goku used to cry for long periods of time which led to psychological disruptions to an infant Broly. King Vegeta sentenced both Broly and his father, Paragus, to death but thanks to the help of Broly they both survived and managed to escape just before Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta.
This version of Broly was very unstable and as he matured, he became even more violent. At one point his father had to plant a device to keep Broly under control. Broly had 3 primary states depending on his state of mind.
When he was under his fathers’ control, his power was greatly suppressed and as a result, Broly was on the same level of a traditional Super Saiyan. In this form, he had blue-to-purple colored hair and his power slowly increased over time. His second state was just a bulkier version of the previous with no increase in any sort of power.
His third form was the berserker state in which Broly completely lost control of himself. He also bulked up vastly yet his speed remained unchanged. His Power-level in this state is far beyond that of a Super Saiyan 2 but still not enough to defeat Goku, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks together. His Hair and aura adopts a slightly green tint as well.
Broly in Dragon Ball Super was born around the time when Vegeta was born. In this version, he is banished with his father on a faraway planet by King Vegeta who was jealous of Broly’s power level as compared to his son Vegeta. Broly is much more mentally stable than his predecessor and is mostly manipulated by his father.
Broly’s form in this version is much more unique. This is because before he enters into his Super Saiyan form he enters into a form called Wrath state. The Wrath state helps Broly to tap into his inner oozaru power in his base form. The main drawback of this state is that one has to sacrifice control over his mind similar to the oozaru transformation. In his Super Saiyan form, Broly is strong enough to fight both Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue form. Pushed further, Broly can transform into his Legendary Super Saiyan form. During his fight with Gogeta the dimension shattered due to his extreme power level.
Putting them side by side, there is no doubt that the DBS version of Broly is far superior to the original, both in character and in raw power.
